چکیده

The CAT (Cerenkov Array at Thémis) γ-ray detector 1 operates above 250 GeV since Autumn 1996. Its observation program has been largely devoted to the study of blazars. These objects are radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN’s) with a relativistic jet which is pointed directly to the observer. The jet emission dominates that of the accretion disk (and of the host galaxy) over a large energy domain. Thus, blazar observations offer the possibility of investigating the physics of jets more deeply, including particle acceleration and energy extraction in the vicinity of the AGN’s central “engine”. Until now, however, only two blazars have been clearly detected a at very high-energies (VHE) from the Northern hemisphere, these are Markarian 501 (Mkn 501) and Markarian 421 (Mkn 421). Since both are variable sources, their study by an atmospheric Cherenkov experiment requires a kind of “test beam” to check that the detector response is well under control. This is further mandatory if one wishes to compare the temporal and spectral properties of these blazars between different observation epochs. In VHE γ-ray astronomy, the Crab nebula is a strong source with a steady flux which can be used as a standard candle. In the following, we review briefly the results obtained by CAT on this source over four years, before dealing with the observations of Mkn 501 and Mkn 421.

Tev Blazars as Seen by the Cat Telescope

To date, only two extragalactic objects have been firmly established as very high-energy gamma-ray sources in the Northern sky: these are the two blazars Markarian 501 and Markarian 421. This paper reviews the most striking results obtained from these sources by the CAT atmospheric Cherenkov imaging telescope, with a particular emphasis on the 1999-2000 and 20002001 observation campaigns of Mar...

The Cat Imaging Telescope for Very-high-energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

The CAT (Cherenkov Array at Th emis) imaging telescope, equipped with a very-high-deenition camera (546 fast phototubes with 0:12 spacing surrounded by 54 larger tubes in two guard rings) started operation in Autumn 1996 on the site of the former solar plant Th emis (France). Using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique, it detects and identiies very high energy-rays in the range 250 GeV to a few ...

OBSERVATION OF THE CRAB NEBULA GAMMA-RAY EMISSION ABOVE 220 GeV BY THE CAT CHERENKOV IMAGING TELESCOPE

The CAT imaging telescope, recently built on the site of the former solar plant “Thémis” (French Pyrénées), observed γ-rays from the Crab nebula from October 1996 to March 1997. This steady source, often considered as the standard candle of very-high-energy γ-ray astronomy, is used as a test-beam to probe the performances of the new telescope, particularly its energy threshold (220GeV at 20 zen...

Observation of Extragalactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope

MAGIC is currently the largest single dish ground–based imaging air Cherenkov telescope in operation. During its first cycle of observations more than 20 extragalactic objects have been observed, and very high energy γ-ray signals have been detected in several of them. The results of this observations are presented, together with a discussion of the spectral characteristics and the flux variabi...

Observation of Galactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope

During its first cycle of observations, the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescope has observed very high energy γ-rays from fife galactic objects: the Crab Nebula, the SNRs HESS J1813-178 and HESS J1834-087, the Galactic Center and the γ-ray binary LS I +61 303. After a short introduction to the MAGIC telescope and the data analysis procedure, the results of these fife...
